This is a intermediate-level tutorial on how to create rivers

Overview

In this tutorial, we will

Tutorial

Important: Rivers can be tricky, so it may be necessary to tweak things a bit during the tutorial, or backup and start over. If things get too tangled, simply UNDO with CTRL-Z, or start over at the beginning of the tutorial and try again.

Create a riverbed

An example of a simple riverbed for this tutorial (yours may look different).

Create a Ribbon Water node

Place a water node at one end of the riverbed.

Shape the water node

Stretch the node along the length of the riverbed.
To start, don't worry about the width of the river, just get the length more or less centered in the riverbed.
Widen the river until you can't see the yellow lines along the edges anymore.
If a white "fold" occurs in the river, this probably means that control points are too close together.

Modify the node's properties

There are many properties that can be modified to adjust the way that the water looks, but we'll just play with a few of them.

The final river. Note that the parts that overlap the heightmap are not an issue, as with a properly designed area, they will not be visible to the player anyway, since the view off the "edge" of the heightmap will be blocked by terrain or buildings.
